Riassunto/commento: |
The subject of this article is Scipione Lentolo, who for 30 years was Reformed minister of Chiavenna, the largest and most influential Italian-speaking Reformed church of the Grisons bordering on the Swiss Confederation. The article considers how Lentolo handled the Bible, which exegetical tools he had at his disposal, how his readings were reflected in the way he instructed his own congregation, and finally how some Reformed colleagues influenced his approach. The analysis is based on both printed and manuscript sources and it focuses in particular on two recent archival discoveries: a manuscript work of exegetical nature by Lentolo meant for the instruction of the congregation of Chiavenna, and his annotated personal Bible. More generally, the article casts light on the Bibles (Latin and vernacular) which were read by Italian émigré Protestants in the sixteenth century. |
