Summary/Notes:

This article focuses on the impact of the French Wars of Religion on the Italian religious landscape between c.1555 and c.1580. It shows how Calvinist propaganda attempted to stimulate the creation of an Italian Reformed church along with the Huguenot lines, working against both Inquisitorial repression and significant religious dissimulation. The article employs a large array of pamphlets and texts, starting from the history of the translations of Calvin's Catechism into Italian, as well as a case study such as the one of Vicenza. It demonstrates that when trying to understand Calvinist propaganda, it is necessary to look at the international political context; the essay has a transnational Reformation approach, and is built on the study of both international Catholicism and Calvinism.
